On the 19th July 2009 the Government of Mozambique to a step closer to creating Africa’s first Marine Transfrontier Conservation Area (TFCA), when it declared a 678sq km coastline as a Marine Protected Area. This protected area stretches 3 miles into the sea.

The Mozambique Minister for Tourism, Mr Fernando Sumbana, stated that the new Protected Area was a major step towards saving the Leatherback and Loggerhead marine turtles, who have become accustomed to laying their eggs in the sanctuary of the  coastline during the breeding season. The TFCA initiative in Mozambique, similarly to other TFCA initiatives, is working in partnership with the Mozambique Government, and the Peaks Park Foundation.
