To understand why certain communities use species they do and what impact this has, the participatory rural appraisal workshops were started. The workshop was based around indigenous fruit, vegetable, medicinal and timber related species, which in turn led to discussion on species that may be more appropriate.
The team is comprised of members of the Zambia Wildlife Authority and members of the local community, who were/are assisted by the Peace Parks Foundation community development staff. Up to 85 people attended the workshops, many of whom had travelled huge distances from their villages. These workshops really form a major part of an ongoing ecological and socio-economic baseline study.
Peace Parks Foundation are looking into alternative methods of creating income from the TFCA’s, which differ from creating Carbon Credits (Carbon Trading) to Commodity Trading.
