SAVE CHINA'S TIGERS
The Chinese Tiger, from which all other tigers have descended, will become extinct within a few years if no action is taken.
Tigers originated in China more than two million years ago. As recently as 100 years ago there were eight tiger subspecies in the world, now only five remain. It is tragic that the ancestor of all tigers is most endangered. Estimates put the wild Chinese tiger population at between 10 and 30, while around 60 survive in Chinese zoos.
Save China's Tigers is helping the tiger survive through a large-scale Reintroduction Project. In cooperation with the Chinese Government and international experts, one or two captivity-bred Chinese Tiger cubs have been transported to South Africa each year to a purpose-built reserve where they are undergoing a Wilderness Training programme to ignite their natural hunting skills. The tigers given back their freedom have shown remarkable progress and are now able to capture their own prey.
The tigers and their offspring will be returned to China from 2008, to restored pilot reserves in their native land.
