THE WILDERNESS FOUNDATION
Founded in 1976, the Wilderness Foundation is dedicated to preserving the world's remaining wilderness areas across the globe, through advocacy, education, and wilderness experience programmes. With a central mission that wilderness is the base upon which human society exists, the Foundation's projects highlight the critical balance needed between wilderness, wildlife and people.
Drawing on many lessons taken from our African roots and experience, The Foundation offers people an opportunity to reconnect to wilderness and wildlands through a rich programme of trail experiences in Scotland, Wales, Northern Europe, South Africa and other parts of the world. Wildland based leadership development for young people and adults, and social initiatives in the UK, include working with youth at risk and reconciliation of former adversaries from the Northern Ireland conflict.
Support is also provided for socio-environmental projects in Africa - among them UMZI, providing livelihoods and training for AIDS orphans, and IMBEWU giving wilderness experience to youth leaders from inner city and rural areas in South Africa.
Working with numerous collaborators it also supports action for the preservation of wild areas as well as seeking ways to link rural communities to the social and economic benefits of conserving surrounding wilderness or natural habitat zones.
