Join the Wilderness Foundation UK and Top Left Corner for a week of creative renewal in a place of wild and transformative beauty.

This week long event at Glencanisp Lodge (nr. Lochinver, Scotland) is an exploration of the transformative power of nature, landscape and sense of place through creative writing and gentle outdoor experiences. The week will help participants to renew and deepen their creativity and to re-awaken their sense of self, by immersing in the glorious environment of Assynt and the north-west Highlands of Scotland.

The workshop is for anyone who likes to write or has aspirations to write about their deeper connection to self and nature, and anyone who is interested in the transformational power of nature. Participants will be guided through a range of creative activities set in the natural surrounds of Glencanisp Lodge. Writing exercises, games, quiet times and sharing will combine with activities in the outdoors that are designed to evoke a closer connection to nature and a deeper sense of self. The workshop will deliver at a relaxed pace, with opportunities to respond spontaneously to weather events and wildlife sightings. Assynt has been inhabited (if sparsely) for thousands of years, and a key aspect of the week will be to explore how people and landscape can be mutually enriching and to feel ourselves as creative elements of the natural world.

The facilitators for this workshop are our own Nick Ray and author and poet Mandy Haggith. Workshop duration is 5:00 p.m. Saturday 30th October 2010 to 10:00 a.m. Saturday 6th November 2010.

Workshop Fees

Residential: £750 per person

Non-residential: £550 per person

The courses will teach participants techniques to minimise their impact in the wild and will be beneficial to anyone who works in outdoor education, the outdoor pursuit industry or those who enjoy outdoor recreation.

Course Instructor Myles Farnbank says:

“As increasing numbers of people seek the beauty and exhilaration of outdoor recreation, our collective mark on the environment and its natural processes increases. Litter, disturbance to vegetation, water pollution, wildlife, livestock and other people are all indicators of the need to develop a national ethic that protects both natural and cultural heritage.”

Accredited One Day Awareness Course: 16th April 2010

Participants will learn about the seven principles of the Leave No Trace ethic and the course will involve some practical sessions. It is suitable for any experience level.

Price: £50 per participant

The Two Day Trainer Training: 17th & 18th April 2010

This two day programme is recognised by the Leave No Trace Centre for Outdoor Ethics. The practical course gives recognised LNTT status to successful participants. The course equips participants to understand demonstrate and teach state of the art minimum impact techniques for a variety of groups, lead a discussion on outdoor ethics and help others to explore their own personal outdoor ethic. The programme looks at a variety of teaching topics, styles and session ideas which can be aimed at all countryside users from children to proficient mountaineers and paddlers. It will also contain an overview of Master Educator Courses.

Price: £100 per participant.

Both courses will be held in Little Baddow, Essex. Course fees are payable.

The workshop was based around indigenous fruit, vegetable, medicinal and timber related species, which in turn led to discussion on species that may be more appropriate.

The team is comprised of members of the Zambia Wildlife Authority and members of the local community, who were/are assisted by the Peace Parks Foundation community development staff. Up to 85 people attended the workshops, many of whom had travelled huge distances from their villages. These workshops really form a major part of an ongoing ecological and socio-economic baseline study.

Peace Parks Foundation are looking into alternative methods of creating income from the TFCA’s, which differ from creating Carbon Credits (Carbon Trading) to Commodity Trading.

The Living Mountain will be a weekend exploring our inner worlds in relation to the wild and beautiful outer environment of the Rhinog Mountains in North Wales. We will camp at Graig Ddu Isaf (Lower Black Rock) a small holding set in the woodland at the foot of the mountains Fach and Fawr. The camp will be basic with washing and cooking facilities (an open fire weather permitting), and basic camp toilet. There will be opportunities to wash and bath in a local stream running by camp-site.

Weather in the mountains even at this time of year can be very changeable, so participants are advised to come prepared for mountain weather (an equipment list will be provided upon booking) i.e. warm water proof changes of clothing suitable for mountain walking and camping (some equipment such as tents can be borrowed, ask when booking).

The weekend will follow and adapt to the process of the individuals and group as it evolves. But the focus will be on exploring our relationship to the environment and the embodied feelings this evokes within us. We will explore the mountains at the pace and ability of the group, no one is expected to be an experienced hillwalker or climber (we will only move onto steeper terrain at the comfort and ability of the group members). There will be opportunity over the weekend to experience some solo time in the mountains.

Our new Family Bushcraft Weekend went very well over the Easter holidays. Everyone got stuck into the task of building a large dome shelter using bendy Hazel and lightweight tarpaulins for each family to ensure a snug and dry night. A foraging walk for useful plants, a ‘no matches allowed’ fire lighting challenge, lessons on how to find safe drinking water in the woods, some very successful campfire bread making and a lot of whittling were also crammed in to this busy weekend with an Easter egg hunt thinly disguised as a tracking exercise to finish off.

We are pleased to bring you news of a workshop/course taking place this coming October, which will appeal to anyone who has an interest in sustainable living:

Wild Nature, Human Nature

Deep sustainability through Ecotherapy

Dates: Monday 6th to Sunday 12th October
Location: Knoydart, Scotland
Facilitators: David Key & Mary-Jayne Rust
Price: £550 – fully residential including boat transfers and VAT

This is a retreat-style course set in a wild, remote and beautiful place. It’s designed for anyone wishing to encourage sustainable living through a deeper level of psychological awareness. The course weaves together theory and personal experience to provide powerful inspiration for home and work.

We have come to believe that we are separate from nature: that we have, somehow, transcended our earthly biology and made ourselves an exception to ecological rules. This ‘separation myth’ has led us to live beyond our habitat’s ability to sustain us and we must deal with it urgently, if we are to survive its consequences.

This courses explores the psychopathology of the modern separation myth and how we might heal it. The quality of wildness, that ‘self-willed’ creative force that runs through the heart of all things, provides a thread that can directly reconnect us back to our ecological selves. We come to remember, beyond the realms of intellectual doubt, that we are of nature. This form of ecological therapy offers a way to re-unite personal and planetary healing.
