We want your time in South Africa to be truly special and will work with you to develop an expedition itinerary that genuinely meets your needs – both in terms of experiences enjoyed and the budget you have to work with. The basic programme offered would include the following components:
wilderness journey + cultural immersion
You can then choose to add a number of optional activities to this, such as the Karkloof Canopy Tour, Colonial Battlefields Tour or maybe conservation volunteering with C.R.O.W.
Wilderness Journeys
The wilderness journey forms the heart of your African adventure and can range from five to fifteen days taking in either just one or as many as three different wilderness areas. Possible destinations are:
- Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve
- iSimangaliso Wetland Park (formerly Greater St. Lucia Wetlands Park)
- uKhahlamba (Drakensburg) Mountains
Each environment offers a different terrain and accordingly different challenges. Wildlife encounters will also vary, with Imfolozi affording the best opportunities to get up close to nature, being home to the Big Five species – lion, buffalo, rhino, elephant and leopard. It is for this reason that Imfolozi is one of our most popular destinations.
iSimangaliso will bring you in to the domain of the hippo. Participants will wild camp close to the lake shores and as you lay in your sleeping bag at night, looking up at the stars in the sky, hippo “laughter” will echo across the darkened marshes. You will also have the chance to see hippo in their natural habitat, interacting with one another, feeding and swimming.
The uKhahlamba Mountains take you into a region rich in cultural and ancestral history. Participants will find themselves sleeping in caves as well as under open skies, exploring the mountainous terrain and you may even reach the Tugella Falls – the world’s second highest waterfall with a total drop of 947 metres. Expeditions in the uKhahlamba qualify as a DofE Gold Expedition and rather than being guided, you will be shadowed by our team from a distance, making this on of the most challenging wilderness journeys that we offer.
Culutral Immersion & Community Volunteer Work
We currently offer two different Zulu communities as destinations where groups can immerse themselves into the Zulu culture and contribute to the villages through community volunteer work.
- The Mabandla Experience
- Ekutheleni Village Community Stay
These programmes are offered in partnership with our responsible tourism operator African Insight.
