Social Intervention

Our social programmes aim to provide health and wellbeing for the Individual and Society

“The wilderness has a way of stripping from your mind all pretentious and false values.  The rhino was interested in only one thing – his survival.  To him it was of no interest what my origins were, who I was, what colour my skin was, or whether or not I liked rugby or football…”

The effect of wilderness experience offers a powerful tool for social and individual change. The Foundation is working increasingly on social issues that draw benefit from sensitive wilderness experiences. Programmes include:

TurnAround

Vulnerable teenagers benefit from our multi-faceted programme – TurnAround. Young people supported by coaches and wilderness therapists explore, and grow to understand, their personal responsibility for making positive changes in their lives.

Peace and Reconciliation

We live in a world of an underlying fear of violent conflict and terrorism. We engage in programmes that bring people from often violently opposed backgrounds together in wilderness. Here in a natural, non-judgemental environment, principles of finding a sense of common humanity, understanding the history of difference, and an acceptance of diversity can come to the fore.

Umzi Wethu

A pioneering conservation initiative focusing on vulnerable youth impacted by the HIV crisis and other causes. The programme helps the most vulnerable youth to realise their potential through providing them with accredited training in eco-tourism, personal growth skills and development, job competency and an opportunity to develop a love and respect for nature.
