Down to Earth

Local Food Programme

This community oriented project has been designed to encourage strong community relationships while spreading awareness of sustainability, environmental issues, organic principles and local food issues, benefits to health and biodiversity.  The overall aim is to understand our individual impact on our environment and the positive changes we can make to address environmental impact while still meeting our needs.

Our Aims for the Down to Earth Local Food Programme:

  • To encourage local people to enjoy growing their own organic produce;
  • To provide a forum for young and old alike to learn about the natural world, through cultivation of food crops;
  • To establish a respect for, and appreciation of the environment including an awareness of sustainability issues;
  • To contribute socially to the local community, through providing opportunities to engage with nature and our neighbours;

Benefits of Down to Earth

  • Volunteers can learn horticultural skills and will be actively encouraged to direct the planning and project development.
  • The project will encourage participation by all area of society – the elderly, young families, community groups, people with mental health problems and those with a physical disability.
  • Through the programme we will promote stainability, looking at where our food comes from, how we can cultivate at least some of our own food in our neighbourhood and that this can lead to a greener, better environment.  We will also promote healthier eating and an active lifestyle.
  • The project will be run as a community resource, helping to improve local relations, physical and mental health and the local environment.

Down to Earth is funded by the Big Lottery Fund Awards for All grants programme.  We are grateful for their support without which D2E would not have been possible.
