Wilderness Africa Trust knows that African wilderness areas are under severe threat. It is the initiative of a group of dedicated conservationists and wilderness lovers who intend to take practical action.
For this to happen, people in First World countries, who through tourism are the main beneficiaries of wilderness areas, need to support African Third World countries, both financially and morally, to preserve their wilderness areas and their biodiversity.
The goals of the trust:
- To identify wilderness areas under threat and foster international awareness and support. The Umfurudzi Safari Area and Mazowe Valley Area (including Nyatana Wilderness) will be the initial pilot project in Zimbabwe and will pave the way for the establishment of further protected wilderness areas.
- To immediately provide the finance to patrol the Umfurudzi Safari Area and protect it from ongoing poaching, netting, snaring, and environment degradation.
- To convince the adjacent communities of the importance of preserving the Umfurudzi Safari Area and the Mazowe River, and declaring it a protected area.
- To provided funds to restock the Umfurudzi Safari Area with more wildlife species such as Giraffe, Black Rhino, Eland, Nyala & Waterbuck.
- To provide the funds to build a perimeter fence along the most threatened boundaries.
- To fund basic infrastructure with which to administer and maintain our operations in the area (e.g. office, accommodation, water supply, workshop etc). Initially, Hippo Pools Wilderness Camp has kindly offered office space, computer facilities and staff time at its Harare base at the Bronte Hotel.
- To initiate and establish sustainable projects for the area’s local women to develop local craft projects, and to create positive and sustainable local employment opportunities for the community.
- To encourage educational schools trips to increase conservation awareness amongst Zimbabwe’s younger generations.
We are pleased to support Wilderness Africa Trust and be associated with their good works.
