The Republic of South Africa covers an area of 1,219,080 square kilometres – a land mass some five times that of the UK. The country is bordered by the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe in the north and Mozambique in the east.
The republic is divided into nine provinces:
- Gauteng
- Mpumalanga
- Northern Transvaal
- The North West Province
- KwaZulu Natal
- Free State
- Eastern Cape
- Western Cape
- Northern Cape
Most of our South Africa based trails programmes take place in KwaZulu Natal – home to the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve, the Greater St. Lucia Wetland and Zululand – all destinations that feature on our trail itineraries. Durban – the point of entry into many international travellers seeking a wilderness experience is home to our sister organisation the Wilderness Leadership School, whose headquarters are based in the Kenneth Steinbank Nature Reserve in the Durban Hills. The WLS offers comfortable overnight accomodation and is a good place to start your trail from, travelling out the next morning with our highly trained guides to either Imfolozi or St. Lucia.
