Haberdashers’ Overseas Scholarship
School leavers from Haberdashers’ schools are eligible for a volunteer placement overseas that enables them to experience new cultures and new ways of life.
Participants in the Haberdashers’ Overseas Scholarships, sponsored by the Haberdashers’ Livery Company, go on a five-day wilderness trail in South Africa. They then volunteer with a project for young people whose lives have been impacted by HIV/AIDS. In the process they experience wild nature, develop leadership skills, come to understand other cultures, and learn a new way of life.
The scholarship programme is only open to school leavers from Haberdashers’ schools.
In partnership with the Wilderness Leadership School and Wilderness Foundation South Africa, Wilderness Foundation UK provides the Haberdashers’ Overseas Scholarship programme. the two-week programme includes:
- A five-day wilderness journey in Hluhluwe iMfolozi Wilderness Reserve. Participants camp outdoors, hike with backpacks, cook outdoors and experience wild nature as never before
- Volunteer experience with the Umzi Wethu Training Academy, which serves orphans affected by HIV/Aids. Work experience, interaction with young people from another culture, and community visits help Haberdashers’ particiapnts grow in emotional maturity and social competence.
Before the programme, participants meet in London at Haberdashers’ Hall, where they get acquainted with their fellow travellers and receive a full briefing on their itinerary, equipment, and travel needs. Students are responsible for arranging flights independently.
The programme itself take place during summer. Its timing is planned to ensure that students are home in time to collected their A level results (and process through clearing if necessary.)
Participants are encouraged to take an active role in planning and executing their programme, with the support of the Wilderness Foundation and our partners. The wilderness journey and volunteer work help students develop skills in the following areas:
- Planning and organising
- Decision making and problem solving
- Communication and teamwork
In addition, the wilderness journey gives participants a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Most come to know themselves better because of the time they have spent away from the distractions of modern life and surrounded by the grandeur of the natural world. They gain perspective on the world and their place in it.
